Hello there ,

Thanks for dropping by. I’m Richard and I offer handyman services in Sussex and Surrey at realistic rates and with a friendly and can-do demeanour.

I believe in doing a job well, at a good price and with a minimum of disturbance for my customers (that means I won't play loud, tinny music, I’ll always Hoover up thoroughly and I don’t patronise women about carpentry skills or expect to talk to men about football. In fact, I make not doing this a habit.)

I offer a warm and professional service and am always pleased to give a no-obligation quote for any job, no matter how big or small. I’ve booked my fair share of tradespeople over the years and I know how irritating it is to be waiting for a call back for days when you just want something done, or to be told your job isn’t worth their time. Because I have two careers (see below), I’m happy to take on the little jobs as well as the big ones, in fact I quite enjoy jobs I can squeeze into an afternoon, so please just ask - info@brasstacks.uk

More about me

I’m a professional musician and in my other life, I play the French Horn, in everything from West End musicals to the Royal Albert Hall. My French Horn and I have travelled the globe but during the pandemic we’ve been a bit more homebound than usual, which is when I decided to put my love for DIY to use and branch out as a handyman. As a dad to two young boys and having renovated a house from the ground up with my wife, I’ve done my fair share of building shelves, swing sets, furniture and more, as well as fixing things that have been swung on, snapped off and smashed up by small children. It all comes with the territory. I’m as handy with a hammer as I am with a French Horn (though so far no one has asked me to fix the taps in the Royal Albert Hall… I wish they would though, the plumbing is ancient).

If you ask nicely, I’m always happy to give you a little toot on my French horn after I’ve completed your job, too, though I won’t insist. I know most people prefer to leave the brass to their bathroom taps.

Blowing my own trumpet

I know you’re not here for tales from the orchestra pit, so here’s a bit more about what I can do for you in your home and garden in Sussex or Surrey…

~ General home repairs

~ Basic plumbing jobs (drains unblocked, taps fixed etc)

~ Fixings (shelves, curtains, mirrors and the like)

~ Furniture assembly

~ Dripping/Replacing Taps

~ Boxing (hiding) pipes and wires

~ Decorating (painting, wallpapering and woodwork)

~ Installation of kitchen units

~ Mowing, hedge trimming, bottoming sheds and general garden maintenance

~ Outdoor assembly (sheds, play equipment, raised planters…)

I'm willing to turn my hand to many things, however, so do get in touch and ask, whatever the job.

Send me a postcard, drop me a line

You can contact me on 07976831343 or if you prefer at info@brasstacks.uk. I’ll always get back to you promptly. References are always available, so please feel free to ask. I am based in Horsham, West Sussex, but am happy to travel to locations in Sussex and Surrey, too.

I look forward to having a chat with you.

A note about Covid care

During the pandemic, I’ll do all I can to keep you and your household safe. I’m not accepting cups of tea at the moment (a great shame, but there it is) but I’ll bring my own Thermos and stay out of your way. I’ll wear a mask indoors and will aim to do as much outdoors as possible. You can pay me via bank transfer once the work is complete.

While I’d like to shake your hand (I have a warm and firm handshake, I can tell you) I’m sticking to a cheery nod and a tip of my hat for now. Elbow bumps are also on the menu.
